India is a journey of many worldsIndia rewards travelers who give it time. In Delhi, grand boulevards and lively old lanes reveal different chapters of the city. The Taj Mahal glows in the early light, Jaipur welcomes you with rose-colored façades and lively bazaars, and Kerala slows the pace beside palm-lined backwaters. The distances are real, so I recommend building in unhurried mornings, comfortable transfers and a little breathing room between big days.
October through March is usually the most comfortable window for northern India’s classic sightseeing, while April and May can bring intense heat. The southwest monsoon typically reaches much of the country from June into early fall, though conditions vary by region. Kerala’s tropical south follows its own pattern, so match the season to the places you most want to see and check local conditions close to departure.
U.S. citizens need a visa for India; eligible visitors can apply for an e-Tourist visa before traveling. Your passport generally needs six months of validity from the visa application date and two blank pages. Plan ahead for the visa process and verify the current rules for your passport, arrival airport and itinerary before booking nonrefundable travel. Pack light, breathable clothing that covers shoulders and knees for visits to religious sites, plus comfortable walking shoes and a scarf or layer for changing conditions.
For a more complete picture than a quick city-to-city dash, I chose A Portrait of India, a 17-night journey through Delhi, Varanasi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Kerala and Mumbai. The itinerary weaves in a cruise on the Ganges, a ride through Kerala’s peaceful canals, village and cultural encounters, and the great landmarks travelers dream about. Take a look at the route and current departure options on my Loving Life Travel page, then let me help you review the pace and shape the right trip for you.
India is as much about the moments between its famous sights as the sights themselves: the chai shared on a cool morning, the colors of a market, music drifting from a courtyard, and the quiet of the water after a bustling city.
