Switzerland by Scenic Train: Alpine Routes, Lakes & Easy Planning

Lucerne Switzerland 570 × 740There is a special kind of hush when a red train rounds an Alpine bend and a valley opens below. Switzerland turns the journey itself into the highlight: lakeside promenades, storybook towns and mountain railways stitched together with remarkable ease. Give this country time to feel the difference between a grand view and a day you will remember.

What to expect

Basel is a rewarding gateway, with a lively old town and an easy connection to the Rhine. Lucerne makes a welcoming first stay, pairing a compact historic center with lake excursions and mountain day trips. Zermatt brings the Matterhorn into view, while the Bernina and Glacier Express routes turn long-distance rail into a front-row seat to glaciers, viaducts and high valleys. Distances can look short on a map, but mountain excursions and transfers take time. Keep luggage manageable, allow comfortable station connections and leave room in the plan for weather changes at altitude.

When to go

May and June bring green valleys and full waterfalls, though high trails and lifts may open gradually. July through September offers the broadest access for hiking and mountain experiences, along with the greatest demand in popular resorts. December through March is lovely for snow-bright villages and winter scenery; plan around shorter daylight and seasonal activity schedules. Spring and fall can be quieter, but check mountain transport and attraction calendars before you lock in a route.

Before you go

Check passport validity and current entry or travel-authorisation requirements for every traveler’s citizenship and itinerary. Switzerland uses the Swiss franc, and cards are widely accepted, though some small purchases are easier with a little cash. Pack layers even in summer, comfortable walking shoes and a plug adapter. If you plan to hike or visit high elevations, pace yourself and check local conditions. Compare a Swiss Travel Pass with point-to-point tickets based on the rail legs and mountain excursions you actually plan to take; panoramic trains and mountain lifts may require separate reservations or supplements. Reserve key rail seats and well-located hotels early for peak travel dates.

A journey to picture

For a graceful continuation by water, picture seven nights aboard Viking Alruna, sailing from Basel, Switzerland, to Amsterdam, March 13–20, 2027. The Rhine Getaway itinerary includes Basel, Breisach, Strasbourg, Speyer, Rüdesheim, Koblenz, Cologne, Kinderdijk and Amsterdam, with scenic sailing along the river. View the Viking Alruna Rhine Getaway on Loving Life Travel for the itinerary and current details.

For a day in the high Alps, consider the Jungfraujoch, often called the Top of Europe. The excursion options, departure points and inclusions are gathered in my Switzerland destination guide, alongside more ideas for shaping the trip around the views you most want.

Let’s make the rail days part of the adventure, not just the way to get somewhere. Find more inspiration at LovingLifeJourneys.com.
